Activity for 2/7-2/8:
At the summit, at Halema`uma`u crater there was lava spattering in at least two places in the bottom of the crater, and the lava level was rising. The amount of sulfur dioxide gas leaving the vent is still elevated compared to the 2003-2007 average amount. GPS receivers recorded expansion at the Halema`uma`u crater. Seismic tremors increased at 9 PM last night and then decreased. There was a normal amount of smaller earthquakes that occurred. There were five earthquakes beneath Kilauea that were able to be located.
At the Pu`u`O`o crater there was an increase in seismic tremors, and the tremor level was constant at the TEB vents. GPS receivers recorded expansion of the rock at the Pu`u`O`o crater. The number of small earthquakes were within normal ranges. Scientists were able to map out a pahoehoe lava flow from the TEB vent, and they discovered that it had moved 700 meters in the last five days.
Kilauea is currently erupting, and is a very active volcano. Click here to read about the activity at nearby volcano Mauna Loa. After you have read about the current activity at Mauna Loa and about the current activity at Kilauea mentioned in this post, respond to this post by comparing and contrasting the current activity at these two volcanoes.

I think that it is very cool that scientists can know what is going on inside of Kileauea right now.
The Mauna Loa volcano and Moku ‘Aweoweo volcano have a few differences. Such as the Mauna Loa isn’t erupting. There is also no significant change in line lengeth arcross the summit or flanks. There is no more than 10 earthquakes per week beneath the Mauna Loa summit. On the other hand Moku ‘Aweoweo the crater floor has reported gas concentrations within normal values. Fumaroles temperatures continued to slowly decrease. Although these to volcanoes do have there differences the do a have a few similarities. For instance they are both volcanoes and they are both located in Hawaii. These two volcanoes are very interesting.
I learned that Mauna Loa is likely to be dormant now. It is not erupting. I think it is interesting how volcanoes can become dormant

What I learned is that Muana Loa is now likley a dormant volcano. Moku`Aweoweo on the other hand is bound to erupt sometime soon. Sensors reported a raise in volcanic gas levels.
I learned that Muana Loa is likely to be dormant now. Moku`Aweoweo probably is going to erupt soon. Sensors in the area have reported a bit of a raise in vilcanic gas levels.

Mauna Loa is not erupting and is not very active. That is like the exact opposite of Kilauea.
I learned that Mauna Loa is not erupting constantly like Kilauea which is constantly erupting. And that there are no more than 10 earthquakes per week beneath Mauna Loa, and 1-5 earthquakes beneath the Kealakekua area of west Mauna Loa.
I learned that Mauna Loa is not erupting and is not active, where as Kilauea is erupting constantly; without a stop. That is a big difference between the two. Also, there hasn't been a significant change in things on Mauna Loa, and there are different things happening on Kilaueau.
